Business Development

Peter Drucker once said “A business has no higher requirement than to create customers”. Without clients, everything the business is doing from operations to R&D to processes, are all absolutely useless.

Just like Grand Unified Theory of the universe, it is important to understand and identify that one theory on developing business that will help you achieve short term and long term goals.

THINK BIG

Business is not all about making money in the quickest possible way, rather is about giving importance to more consequential factors like value, prestige and ethical means to grow a business. Businesses should not depend on factors such as making quick money or unethical tactics in order to achieve short term growth. Long term growth of the business depends on creating value that should be on top of your list for sustainable business development strategies.

MARKETS

A business should always keep itself open to new markets by identifying new customers who may want a product that you are offering but not getting it. It should be the responsibility of business development personnel of any organization to identify new sources for their prospect buyers and tapping in the market before the competitors do.

customers

They are the people who pay you for your products and services, and without them you won’t have any business to develop. But not everyone is a natural customer for your business. Maybe your product doesn’t have the features I’m looking for. Maybe your product is perfect, but I don’t even know your company sells it. Or maybe you’re not reaching me because you’re not knocking on my door. That’s because customers “live” in specific markets.

Building relationships

To ensure that your business develops long term value for the organization as a whole, you need to build relationships with your clients, employees and customers that are based on trust and mutual respect.

In-Person Meeting Format

You’re better able to notice body language when there are fewer people. “In a group of 20 or more, you can’t keep track of the subtle cues you need to pick up, and if you want people to have the opportunity to contribute, limit attendance. The challenge with large meetings isn’t just that everyone won’t have a chance to talk but that many of them won’t feel the need to. “When many hands are available, people work less hard than they ought to,”

Small - No More than 5

Business is not all about making money in the quickest possible way, rather is about giving importance to more consequential factors like value, prestige and ethical means to grow a business. Businesses should not depend on factors such as making quick money or unethical tactics in order to achieve short term growth. Long term growth of the business depends on creating value that should be on top of your list for sustainable business development strategies.

No Devices Allowed

A business should always keep itself open to new markets by identifying new customers who may want a product that you are offering but not getting it. It should be the responsibility of business development personnel of any organization to identify new sources for their prospect buyers and tapping in the market before the competitors do.

Swift - As Brief As Possible

that people stay more focused during shorter time spans. Classic studies have found that groups adjust both their rate of work and their style of interaction in response to deadlines and time constraints. Groups solving problems typically communicate at a faster rate and used more autocratic decision-making processes under high time pressure than they do when time pressure was low. Once people realize you’re tight on time, they stop asking questions or talking and focus on getting the work done.

Stand Up

Stand-up meetings have been shown to be about 34% shorter than sit-down meetings, yet they produced the same solutions. These types of solutions encouraging. We like that people are trying to do something bold to change up meetings—going for a walk, standing up. But don’t let the format distract you from doing what really matters: running an effective meeting.

Participation - Call On Those Who Don’t

Make sure everyone participates, and call on those who don’t. Some people may want to speak up in a meeting but feel like they can’t unless they’re asked. People who hold back often have a valuable perspective on the conversation, and we need to draw them out. People also like to know that their opinions are being heard and considered. And just by asking people in a meeting of their opinion, you raise their commitment to the issues being discussed.

No Update Meetings

If you’re only meeting to transfer information, rethink your approach. Waste of finite executive resources and focus. Business meetings often require people to commit, focus, and make decisions with little or no attention paid to the depletion of the finite cognitive resources of the participants—particularly when the meetings are long or too frequent. So if you can avoid scheduling yet another meeting, you should.

Always Set Agenda

Always set an agenda ahead of time, and be clear about the purpose of the meeting. Know what you want to accomplish. It’s hard to imagine more sound advice about meetings. Designing the meeting and setting an agenda ahead of time is critical. Lacking a clear plan of action is often why groups get derailed in decision making. Any time you need to bring a group together, you need to make it a good use of everyone’s time—including your own.

Prepare

One of the most fundamental but absolutely crucial elements required to have a successful meeting. Part of this is to explain what’s going to happen at this meeting to yourself and others so participants come knowing what they’re going to do. Having a plan gives the opportunity to clarify intentions, goals, and think through the forces that could make it difficult to accomplish and plan for it and what could make it easier.
